It consists of seven studies corresponding to Martin Luther’s seven marks of the Church. Each study contains thoughtful opening and closing prayers related to the particular theme of the day. Scripture readings open each study and are followed by a series of questions, usually about 8 to 10 in total. The format of this study is simple and clear. I highly recommend it. The questions range from prompts for individual reflection to broader considerations of the church in society. For instance, the study on “The Word of God” asks participants to identify parts of Scripture that are personally compelling as well as those that are dangerous and have been misused. Moreover, the study gives space for individual stories while simultaneously locating participants in the larger story of Lutheran faith and identity. The questions and Scripture readings strike a nice balance between immediate concerns and sustained reflection as well as maintaining a focus on praxis in Christian faith and life. So, too, the tone and structure seem to emphasize group participation over against a lecture-style format. From a practical perspective, the seven studies are correlated but could easily be used individually to study a particular topic such as baptism or worship. This is an organized presentation of material and one that could be adaptable for use in numerous contexts. Pete Speiser | 26-oct-09 |
