A selected Bible verse is read three times with silence for reflection and discussion after each reading. The session ends in prayer . This would be a good study for people comfortable with silence and reflection and auditory learners.
What are the desired results? The participants should be able to understand what the Bible verse says through the inspiration of the Holy Spirit. The questions of “ What does this mean for me? ” should be answered by their reflections on the passage. Participants will gain a greater listening skill from two levels: from the reading of the scripture passage and listening to the Holy Spirit. Goals will be participant’s participation and spiritual growth. Learning will vary based on the participant’s culture and their listening skills and silent reflection. What is acceptable evidence of student understanding and proficiency? By highlighting words and phrases that resonate with the participants and who they identify with, followed up with class discussion giving the leader a picture of their understanding of the Bible verse. The participant should be able to understand the “ big picture ” by using their own words and interpret them to other situations in their lives. Different viewpoints should be expressed by the participants. This should be done in a safe place that allows for differing viewpoints. What learning activities and instruction will facilitate the desired results? The reading, listening, and discussing the reading involves all participants. All need to be active players to make this process work.
There needs t o be a safe place to speak your opinions and a safe physical place without interruptions and external noise. The only item needed is one Bible. This learning model would not be for all people, especially those comfortable with a lecture given by a teacher and students taking notes with little interaction. This method focuses on the student doing the learning and teaching.
Using the WHERETO framework of shaping the learning activities this method shows much of the framework is lacking. How will students know where they are headed? With this single method of doing this study, there is not a clear answer as to where they are headed. How will they be hooked into this? Unless you are an auditory learner, this may be difficult. The experience should help with seeing
the big picture and the big idea. With the time to reflect and rethink the readings, it should give the learner a better understanding of the big picture but it does not give them an object to reflect on their performance. Evaluation would be through the interpretations they receive from the reflections and
oral readings. This could be tailored to the group by adding background music, changing lighting levels, burning candles, having scented items, changing what is sat on. This would be determined after knowing who the group of learners is . To organize the learning activity, this method needs to be explained up front.
This method is reviewed through the lens of Wiggins & McTighe Understanding By Design Overview.
