Blessing of a Workplace
This can be used as a tool for blessing a workplace. Our Lord Jesus often visited people in their workplaces: Simon Peter and Andrew when they were fishing, James and John in their boat mending the nets, the Samaritan woman at the well, Levi at his tax booth and in the market place. He told stories about people's work as illustrations of God's rule: A sower planting seeds, reapers at the harvest time, a woman baking bread, a merchant in search of fine pearls. Jesus said...

It is a challenge to review a blessing, as I am seeking to do with the Blessing of a Workplace, utilizing rubrics designed more for the evaluation of education curricula. Yet one can argue that education takes place in a variety of settings -even blessings -so I will focus on one rubric in particular that was somewhat applicable or at least transferrable.
Mary Boys uses a mapping grid in her book, Educating in Faith: Maps and Visions (Sheed & Ward, 1989) to evaluate curricula. The grid is mostly a list of questions intended to guide and direct the review. I will focus on two: “How is God revealed?” and “How is religious experience understood?”
When discussing how God is revealed in something such as a blessing, it is vital to acknowledge my belief that God is “everywhere”: in our trees, in our food, in our relationships, in our homes, and yes, in our offices. This particular blessing affirms this belief by revealing God’s presence and inviting Him into communion with the participants. The blessing not only involves the space itself, but also all who work there. The significance from Boys’ perspective would be in the revelation that God occupies a variety of things and spaces- even in your office.
Another question posed by Boys in the grid is under her faith and belief category: how is religious experience understood? While this particular blessing might not overtly answer the question, in many ways it supports the question by suggesting it could be an example of a unique religious experience. A blessing is indeed an expression of a religious experience and participation therein has the potential to answer the question.
This blessing was a beautiful invitation to involve God in all aspects of one’s life. So often we compartmentalize our faith to Sundays and church-related activities, putting God in a box, neglecting to affirm that He is everywhere; fully present in our daily lives. Blessing something such as your workspace acknowledges the ever-presence of God and also witnesses to others of the possibility of this experience.
