![]() Identifier: 12082211819 Parable of the Shapes This could be used as a drama for the sermon for Youth Sunday. As worshipers entered the sanctuary, they were asked to select the shpae of their choice from a tray (circle, square, triangle, star, blob in a variety of colors). Children brought these forward for the children's sermon. At the end of the sermon, all were asked to trade in their specific shape for our In-Spite-Of bookmark to be taken home as a reminder of God's all-encompassing love. It could be improved by adding some way of audience participation or response in order to add bodily intelligence to the learning experience. My theological reservations about the idea still apply. Elaine Boyd | 23 Jan 2010 This is a clever idea that I think would be memorable for grade school age children with the rhyme and costumes included. I do think, however, that the concept of inclusiveness and overcoming prejudice isn’t made clear by using the phrase “in spite of”. I don’t think that God wants us to love people “in spite of” their differences. To say “ I accept you in spite of” the fact that we have different abilities, race, or any other factor seems patronizing. I think that it would be more true to God’s character to say that we accept each other just the way we are—that we are becoming the shape that God intended us to be. Elaine Boyd | 18 Jan 2010 |
