Background Info Guide for the Movie "Luther"
This resource was written after having taken a confirmation class to see the movie "Luther." While they enjoyed the movie on some level, they were pretty clueless to the political, religious, and social scene of Luther's day. The guide provides that background information - and is suitable for youth and adults to review before seeing the film. It is meant to be printed back-to-back in booklet form (only one page front and back). Martin Luther Reformation movie

This resource is a helpful tool in providing critical context to the Luther film and the true events of Martin Luther’s life. Utilizing Grant Wiggins/Jay McTighe’s Rubric for the 6 Facets of Understanding, I believe this movie guide supplies: a sophisticated level of explanation as it provides a very thorough account of important events in the timeline of Luther’s life, a revealing interpretation of these historical occurrences, a masterful application of the events themselves in identifying which of them were most central to not only the film but Luther’s life, insightful perspective in describing these events in an easily understandable way, a sensitive/perceptive sense of empathy (in highlighting core components of this film that viewers might find more confusing and thus needing more extensive description or explanation), and a thoughtful self-knowledge, again, in paying particular attention to areas of this story that could best be served by further historical context provided by this guide.

More than simply going through a timeline of Luther’s life, this resource seeks to identify the events that led up to some of the major occurrences of the church at the time – precipitated by Luther and other reformers or leaders of the time. This guide educates readers on some much-needed context of the people and places surrounding Luther’s rise to ‘fame’ (or ‘infamy’!), utilizing language and descriptions that could be helpful in the context of a youth viewing and discussion of this film without being overly historical or confusing. The succinct and clear nature of this resource would make it easy to use without frustrating readers, and even provides some helpful definitions that welcome readers/viewers into this story without supposing they have a pre-existing knowledge of this historical or theological context. A scripture verse and a few questions included (in the context of explanations) could even create interesting starting points for further discussion after the film. Overall, this resource makes for a useful aide to any group or individual preparing to learn more about Luther’s life and work by watching the Luther film.

This resource should be given to every person who watches the Luther movie. The writing and information presented is very valuable for non-seminarians and seminarians alike.
First, the personal information about Martin Luther sets up the movie. This gives the viewer a better understanding of what Luther was struggling with, both within him and within the church. This information sets the stage for the whole movie and can be looked at throughout the movie for more understanding.
Second, the Time of Luther section gives some great historical reference as to what is happening within the church and within the social and economic structures of Luther’s time. Again this gives some reference to the viewer of a time far removed from our minds when thinking about what Luther dealt with, and how radical his position was.
Third, the Important Definitions prevents the viewer from wondering what is happening within the story. It is a great reference to use throughout the movie when terms come up without their meaning discussed and defined.
The next time we watch the Luther movie for our discussion on the Reformation in confirmation class, I will use this as a resource and discussion starter for our small groups. This gives the viewer an easy way to get “caught up” with what Luther’s world was like and what was going on.
