Jesus had been in the city with his disciples for some time. He openly spoke about the fact that he would have to suffer and die to save people from their sins. He also challenged the religious authorities by condemning their self-righteous attitudes. So the Chief Priest and religious leaders met to form a plan. For one thing, it successfully engages the plot and words of scripture. Many discussions and portrayals of the passion narrative ignore or mix different accounts, but this particular script is faithful to the written text. However, I, and most youth, see the the Bible as a book that is written to people in a certain time. In this way, one can change words and phrases a little bit, but that does not make the drama itself work well. Mark himself writes in a very disjointed way, one that does not serve the modern ears well. I would suggest that the language, for one be changed, the drama be slimmed down in a manner that is faithful to Mark's narrative, but effectively redone for a contemporary audience. For one, we may see more humor used! The Gospels are not completely serious... not even Jesus' time in Jerusalem. Keep the audience engaged. Second, cut out the narrative accounts of Jesus' healings. We can see that happening in front of us. Peter McLellan | 26 Oct 2009 |
