Luke 15 and Voicing Our Own Faith Journey
This is a Bible Study and activity that I did for my high school youth group. This resource is best for a small or medium sized youth group. The Biblical text used is Luke 15:11-32 (Prodigal Son). After reading and discussing the text, students are then encouraged to relate this story to their own life journeys. The high school students are granted a safe space where they can share their stories up to this point in their life. This is a great resource to open the students' mind to how God is present or absent within their own lives. The activity that goes along with the Luke 15 text really brings to life the Prodigal Son parable.

I think that this was a very well done Bible Study. The reasons that I thought that this would be a good piece especially for the age group that you were doing is because of the circumstance that the youth no longer have a voice and this piece really gets them into what they believe and gets them to share it not just with the teacher or the person leading the discussion, but also with their peers. Another aspect that I enjoyed in the piece is the way that you brought Scripture into it and how the questions that you asked applied to their own lives. I think for us to be relevant today the children have to see that Scripture does apply to our lives. Along the same lines I think that getting into the Scripture and asking questions about what is happening in the story as well is important. I see throughout this whole lesson a sense that there is passion in the leader to give these kids a sense of what is important and that their voices are important. One of the tools that I find helpful is the Vella tool. A lot of what the 12 principles are come out in this lesson. Some of the examples is a sense of safety, a sound relationship, and also sequence and reinforcement, I think is important that the kids have a sense of safety when it comes to sharing their faith journey and at the same time have that confidence with their peers. This discussion also moves from easy to hard which I think is important for the kids to build up their understanding so they are able to share. Very nice piece.
