The retreat agenda outlined here is an excellent resource for [re]focusing on spiritually for the individual. I appreciate the program’s focus on Leiturgia (worship and prayer), with an emphasis on ‘silence’, which aligns well with the Taize’ style of worship where silence is an essential element of seeking a closeness with God. Parker Palmer (To know as we are known) also stresses the need for silence when he states, “If our speech is to become more truthful it must emerge from and be corrected by the silence that is its source.”(p. 80, To know as we are known. Harper and Row, San Francisco: 1993) I also agree with the format of the retreat, which suggests creating a space for learning also identified by Parker, “a space that consists of openness, boundaries, and hospitality, and safety.” (p. 71). I look forward to using this program with members of my community of faith.
